Prostate cancer is the most common cancer in men, affecting 1 in 8 men within their lifetime. And in the UK alone, more than 11,500 men die from prostate cancer every year. That’s one man every 45 minutes.
All cells are coated in a thick layer of sugar molecules known as glycans. This sugar coating is important for virtually every biological process.
In cancer cells, the sugar coating changes and this can help tumours grow and spread to other parts of the body. Our research aims to exploit these changes to help improve how prostate cancer is diagnosed and develop new treatments for advanced disease.
The GlycoScore blood test is a glycosylation-based blood test for prostate cancer discovered by the Munkley group.
